When Eric Ramirez speaks to a client for the first time, his strategy is to approach the case as if he, or a member of his own family, was the one in their shoes. He does this because he knows firsthand how insurance companies tend to treat people when they’re looking out for their bottom line, having been an attorney for those same insurance companies in the past. He also understands that his clients just want to be able to speak to someone knowledgeable and not have the person on the line make them feel like they’re lying or being judged.
“I like to treat people the same way that I would like someone to treat my own mother. I know that especially with personal injury cases, our clients are facing one of the toughest times in their lives, so I think it's important to be able to empathize with every client I speak to.”
No one wakes up one morning expecting to be in a life-changing accident. Eric knows that when accidents do happen, people don’t usually know what to do next. In fact, one of the biggest reasons he decided to go to law school was because his father had to go through the workers’ compensation system when Eric was in high school. His father was injured at work and ended up needing both knees replaced.
“I just really saw how the insurance company treated him, and how his employer acted towards him. It wasn’t actually until he obtained an attorney that things finally started to turn around for him.”
He went to law school in order to be able to help people like his father, who are mistreated by insurance companies who are looking out for their bottom line. His biggest driving passion is making sure that people know their rights and for them to know that they have an ally in him. For Eric, being an attorney is not only about zealously representing his clients, but also being a good counselor to them.
“It’s our responsibility as attorneys to make sure that our clients feel heard and to help navigate them through the legal system. Whenever possible, I aim to be a source of comfort and reassurance to my clients when they need legal help.”
Before beginning his own practice, he represented both insurance companies as well as plaintiffs, so he has a unique perspective having worked on both sides of the table. From his past work experience, he’s well-acquainted with the various tactics insurance companies use to avoid paying for claims.
But in the end, his heart was never in insurance defense. It has always been in plaintiff’s work.
“I’ve seen egregious behavior on the part of these insurance providers. In the time that I was on the side of insurance companies, it helped me learn what they look for to try and get around payments. I know what sorts of things they look for to try to use to their advantage. Knowing that helps me help better counsel my clients so they can avoid those pitfalls that the insurance company is surely looking for to strengthen their case. I think my experience has really helped me to understand both points of view.”
It's important to Eric to help his clients understand that they have options when they’ve been hurt, and that they are ultimately the ones who make decisions. He’s there to make sure that you know all of your options, and that you understand them all well, before moving forward with the next step.
